Shipment of fake clothing brands seized in Burnie
Customs officers in Burnie have seized their largest ever shipment of fake brand clothing coming into Australia.
More than 600 pieces of clothing and a further 100 labels were imported in a sea container shipped from Vietnam.
Customs Regional Director Tasmania, Steve Wood, said that the items included NBA (US professional basketball) polo shirts and children's Pokemon clothing.
"This seizure also represents the largest seizure of fake goods coming into Tasmania since the detection of a container of fake shoes over five years ago," Mr Wood said.
Customs officers in Burnie used a mobile x-ray van to examine boxes within the 40-foot container.
Closer examination of the consignment revealed several boxes of clothing which breached intellectual property legislation.
The items were detained under the provisions of the Trade Marks Act 1995.
Mr Wood said that importers should be aware of intellectual property legislation and that items may be inspected by Customs to determine their authenticity.
"Customs plays a key role in protecting consumers from purchasing goods which may not only be fake, but may also be dangerous or sub-standard quality."
The first-time importer surrendered the goods and was given a warning.
The maximum penalty under the Trade Marks Act can include a fine of up to $55,000 and/or two years imprisonment.
