Customs and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have foiled an alleged attempt to smuggle what is believed to be up to 11kg of heroin into Australia inside the lining of a passenger's bag.
Following a referral from the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, Customs officers at Sydney International Airport stopped a 25-year old Malaysian woman when she arrived on a flight from Malaysia this morning (25 July).
Customs officers became suspicious of a number of soft-sided bags allegedly being carried by the woman after an x-ray revealed inconsistencies in the base of the bags.
A Customs drug detector dog also reacted positively to the bags.
Closer examination revealed 15 packages concealed in the bottom of the bags.
The woman was interviewed by the AFP and is expected to be charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug later today.
Forensic tests are continuing to determine the exact quantity.
The maximum penalty for drug trafficking offences is a fine of up to $825,000 and/or life imprisonment |
