春花秋月何時了？往事知多少？小樓昨夜又東風，故國不堪回首月明中。
雕欄玉砌應猶在，只是朱顏改。問君能有幾多愁？恰似一江春水向東流。

When will end the spring flower and the autumn moon?
How many bygones known?
East wind came to the small tower again last night;
I can’t look back to the old realm in the moonlight.
Carved railings and jade steps must be still there,
Only the red cheeks changed.
If asking one how much sorrow there could be,
It’s just like a riverful of spring water flowing east.

When will end spring flowers and autumn moon?
I wonder why my happy times vanished so soon.
My small tower stood against the east wind last night,
Unbearable to recall my lost kingdom in the moonlight!

雕栏玉砌应犹在
只是朱颜改
问君能有几多愁
恰似一江春水向东流

Carved balusters and marble steps still stay,
But those rosy faces have withered away.
If you ask me how much I bear my sorrows,
Just like a spring river eastward flows!

春花秋月历来为才子佳人所吟咏，但词人却怕见这美好景象，原因何在？——是怕勾起往日在故国赏花吟月的快乐时光。“雕栏玉砌应犹在，只是朱颜改。”他遥望南国慨叹，“雕栏”“玉砌”也许还在吧；只是当年曾在栏边砌下留恋欢乐的有情之人，已不复当年的神韵风采了。“只是”二字的叹惋口气，传出物是人非的无限怅恨之感。这愁有多深，有多长呢？看那一江东流不尽的春水就有答案了。
