一
　　﹁嘿唷！嘿唷！
　　　嘿唷！嘿唷！嘿嘿唷！﹂
　　　一幕幕﹁嘿唷！嘿唷！﹂的開路景象，時時在華強、華英兄妹倆的腦際縈迴盪漾，胸中滿懷著無限的感激，卻又不知該如何著手去謝恩？尤其當年為桑椊開山築路的那夥不辭辛勞的榮民們，今昔可在何方？他倆真懊惱後悔，當時怎不問問清楚他們的尊姓大名和地址？怪祇怪那時自己年紀太小不懂事，今兒他倆已長大成人，還念念不忘榮民們的深恩厚德。
　　﹁哥哥，如果不是榮民伯伯替我們開路，我們哪會有今天富裕的安適生活啊？﹂
　　﹁可不是嘛！﹂華強眺望蒼穹：﹁說不定我們還跟族人們在荒涼的山地裏過著蠻橫原始生活哩！﹂
　　﹁那是甭說囉！﹂華英隨聲附和：﹁如沒開路，我們也就不會想到種梨、栽蘋果什麼的。如今可利便了，大型貨車不但可開到莊上，甚至還可進到我們的果園，把成熟的果子載運到城市去銷售，這麼一來，更加速增加了我們一筆筆偌大的財富，當然我們的生活也就寬裕改善多了。﹂
　　﹁記得以前我們吃的是山芋野菜，有一餐沒一頓的；穿的衣服是補丁疊補丁；住的是簡陋茅草屋；行的全要仰仗兩管腿子來跋山涉水。現在可好啦！雖然天天沒有山珍海味、佳肴美酒，但從沒饑腸轆轆餓過肚皮。穿著也要講究什麼花樣款式了。住宅已改建成了洋房瓦屋。出外動不動，便要乘汽車、機車什麼的。﹂
　　﹁由於我們家境生活的改善，才有餘力供我倆上學深造呀！﹂華英合掌感恩。
　　﹁小妹，你還記得不記得，家鄉開路的那年，有天當我們正在溪中玩耍時，忽然山洪暴發，把我倆沖走了，如果不是那位好心腸的築路伯伯營救，我們早就沒命了。﹂
　　﹁怎會不記得呢？那位伯伯臉上還因為救我們，而碰裂了一道深深的傷痕。那次我們能活著回來，真是謝天謝地。﹂華英連連作揖叩謝。
　　﹁小妹，我們有今天，不僅要謝天謝地，更應謝謝那位英勇的榮民伯伯。﹂
　　﹁哥哥，我們一定要設法找到那位伯伯謝恩。﹂
　　﹁唉！沒有一滴線索，要找他老人家是談何容易啊！﹂

　　華英又合掌無語祈禱上蒼，渴望能儘快找到他老人家謝恩。

　　　　二
　　一年一度的大學暑期文藝藝術訪問，學校課外活動組已開始選拔隊員。華強、華英憑著能歌善舞的天性本質，果然以高分錄取了。他倆進到團裏來，並不是想露鋒芒，出風頭，而是本著人生以服務為目的來服務社會，更想在這茫茫人海中，尋覓他們倆的救命恩人。
　　九月九日重陽節，是個晴空萬里的好天氣，一群熱心服務的大孩子，乘著榮家派來的大巴士，專程來到了榮民之家，眼見一堂堂︵註一︶曾馳騁疆場，叱吒風雲的榮民們，有的斷了胳膊，有的殘了腿子，仍然堆著滿臉笑容，來迎接這群年青無邪的賓客。同學們見狀，無不由衷感動得肅然起敬。華強、華英不時還領著大夥兒，引吭高歌起隨團輔導老師特意編譜的﹁榮民頌﹂來：︵註二︶
　　﹁意志如純鋼，
　　　軀體似鐵石。
　　　軍營是他的鍊鋼爐，
　　　戰場是他的試金石。
　　　把生命獻給革命，
　　　把軀體捐給國家。
　　　滿臉縐紋是他奮鬥的記錄，
　　　滿身創疤是他不凋零的勳花。﹂
　　歌聲一遍復一遍地唱著，從這個堂唱到那個堂，喨遍了榮家，響徹了雲霄，更激動出了榮民們的熱淚。華強、華英愈加情不自禁地淌著淚水喚喊叮嚀著：
　　﹁伯伯好！
　　　伯伯多保重，
　　　伯伯再見，
　　　伯伯珍重，再見！﹂

　　　　三
又是一場晚會結束了。華強，華英經過聚精會神賣力的演唱後，心身疲憊不堪，於是倆人便攤靠在沙發上休憩，瞬即華英又抱怨惦念著：
　　﹁恩伯還是沒尋到。﹂
　　﹁唉：﹂華強喟然嘆道：﹁真掃興。﹂
　　﹁如能找到恩伯，我們定要好好孝敬他老人家。﹂
　　﹁那當然囉！﹂
　　﹁我們應到哪兒去尋覓他老人家？﹂
　　﹁但願上蒼指引迷津。﹂
　　﹁……﹂華英虔誠合掌默禱。

霎時場外雷電交加落起傾盆大雨來了。禮堂內看上去，總還有百巴人未及離去。打燈光的同學特將燈光照射到門首，好讓榮民們回來休息。華英卻彷彿發現了新大陸般的喜悅、驚訝，突兀放聲大吼大嚷起來：
　　﹁哥哥，哪不是恩伯？﹂
　　﹁……﹂華強睜圓了銅鑼般的大眼在那兒發楞。
　　﹁我不會是在做夢吧！﹂華英拍擊著自己的前額，如瘋如癡地夢囈。
　　﹁小妹，那的確是他老人家。﹂
　　於是兄姝倆便手拉著一溜煙似的躥了過去，緊緊擁抱住了他老人家，嘴裏還不約而同的喚著：
　　﹁恩伯，我們終於找到您了。﹂
　　﹁我不認識你們呀！﹂逗得老先生丈二金鋼摸不著頭緒：﹁你們倆準是看走了眼，認錯了人吧！﹂
　　﹁我們沒認錯人呀！﹂華英伸手撫摸老先生臉頰上的傷痕：﹁您是該認識我們的。﹂
　　﹁老伯，當年如果不是您奮不顧身的下溪去營救，我們倆早就沒命啦！老伯，您是我倆的救命恩人。﹂經華強這麼一提醒，可掀開了他老人家冬封多年的回憶。
　　﹁呵！﹂老先生豁然大悟道：﹁那是很久很久以前的事了，舉手之勞，何足掛齒？﹂
　　﹁恩伯，您跟我們一道回去，我倆要孝敬您老人家一輩子。﹂華強扶攙老先生，巴望他老人家永遠永遠能伴在身旁，好讓自己能善盡報恩的宿願。
　　﹁謝謝你倆的好意。﹂老先生揚手懇謝：﹁國軍退除役官兵輔導委員會，對我們生活關照倍至，還是讓我在這幽美、寧靜、安逸的榮家享樂晚年吧！﹂
　　﹁恩伯，我們兄妹會視您如再生父那樣來敬重。﹂華英親暱地依偎在老人家身旁。
　　﹁我知道。﹂老先生輕拍她的肩膀：﹁謝謝你倆的盛情。﹂
　　﹁恩伯，您不但是我倆的救命恩人，同時您曾經替我們開山築路，給我們村子帶來了繁榮、富裕，我們頗感謝您老人家的大恩大德。﹂華英緊緊挽牢老先生不鬆放。
　　﹁不！不！﹂老先生連連搖手：﹁這還得謝謝國軍退除役官兵輔導委員會的遠見和正確措施了。﹂
　　﹁不！﹂榮家主任立即修正道：﹁我們國軍退除役官兵輔導委員會，全是貫徹上級指示，你們生活能獲得改善，這全要歸功於我們大有為政府的德政。﹂
　　﹁是呀！我們是該感謝我們大有為政府的德政，今後我們更應人人加入建國復國的行列。﹂在旁同學紛紛吐出了愛國的心聲。
　　﹁對！對！﹂老先生豎起大拇指：﹁現在正是你們為國效力的時候了。﹂
　　驟然全禮堂的掌聲，和室外雷聲相互爭鳴了。
