INT. UNIVERSITY LAB – DAY

A Rat scurries through a maze. It stops as..
RICHARD UTTERMAN’s hand reaches down and pushes a piece of cheese toward it.

RICHARD (V.O.)
Come on, girl. Follow the cheese.

The Rat moves forward, ignores the cheese and bites his finger.

INT. RICHARD UTTERMAN’S OFFICE – DAY

A SCREAMING six year old, PETEY, throws the mother of all temper tantrums, lying on his back, kicking the floor and flailing his arms.
When the temper tantrum doesn’t seem to be working, he holds his breath, turning red... then purple... then blue. Even though he’s asphyxiating, he strains with all his might to continue to hold it.

PULL BACK:

RICHARD UTTERMAN (30’s). Proper, professional type. He sits in a leather chair calmly looking down at the straining, blue-faced child, completely unconcerned.
On the other hand, sitting next to him, the child’s MOTHER looks at wits end.

RICHARD
Give it a little while. Even the
toughest rat goes for the cheese in
the end.

MOTHER
My son is not a rat.

RICHARD
Every living creature responds to
positive and negative
reinforcement. Even your son.
Sooner or later, he’ll go for the
Velveeta.
他迟早会跳起来找Velveeta(一种在美国众所皆知的干酪品牌)。

She is trying to contain herself but we see her anxiety bubbling inside, until she can’t hold it any longer.

MOTHER
It’s not working.
不行。

RICHARD
Remember Step l?

MOTHER
I don’t know.

RICHARD
Yes, you do.

MOTHER
Ignore temper tantrums and be
patient.

Richard looks at his watch.
The blue child starts pounding on the carpet.

RICHARD
It won’t last much longer. I give
him a minute.

INT. RICHARD UTTERMAN’S WAITING ROOM - CONTINUOUS – DAY

Petey’s mother shakes Richard’s hand as they stand just outside his office. Deadly serious, the Child stares at them.

MOTHER
You sure have a way with children.
Are you a dad?

RICHARD
I hope to have a stepdaughter soon.

MOTHER
How old?

RICHARD
Ten.
理查德

MOTHER
If she isn’t already, she’ll be
the best behaved ten year old in
San Francisco.

RICHARD
I think Petey here will give her a
run for her money after we’re
through with him.

He ruffles Petey’s hair playfully. Petey looks up at him with an unblinking, hostile stare.

PETEY
You just ruined a good thing for
me. Hope you’re happy.

MOTHER
Oh, relax, Pete. How about we go
home and I fix you a nice grilled
cheese sandwich? Doesn’t that
sound yummy?

PETEY
With ketchup?

MOTHER
Sure.

Richard smiles.

INT. DENISE’S SCHOOL – DAY

A lightning bolt thunders savagely across a black sky.
Another lightning bolt strikes a tall building. Another hits a pine tree in the forest, setting it on fire.

PULL BACK:

Ms. LANGE, Denise’s science teacher, switches off. TV. screen and looks at her class.

MS. LANGE
Lightning bolts are not yet
completely understood by science.
What we do know is that they are
static electricity that originates
in clouds. And as you just saw,
they sometimes travel down from the
clouds and strike objects on the
ground.

The entire class is impressed.

All, that is, except for DENISE (10), sitting in the front row, yellow bow in her hair, looking sweet and deceptively innocent. Totally unimpressed, she gives Ms. Lange a matter-of-fact look and raises her hand.

MS. LANGE (CONT’D)
Yes, Denise?

DENISE
I think you left out some important
details, Ms. Lange.

MS. LANGE
Such as?

DENISE
Lightning doesn’t leave the cloud
and hit objects on the ground.

MS. LANGE
That’s what’s in the textbook
Denise.

DENISE
The textbook is spreading
misinformation.

MS. LANGE
Oh, how so?

DENISE
Objects on the ground send out
streamers in response to the static
electricity in the clouds. The
lightning bolt has to pick out one
of these streamers and connect
to it. Without this connection,
lightning can’t strike the ground

Ms. Lange remains silent. The entire class looks back and forth from Denise to Ms. Lange.

MS. LANGE
How do you know this?

DENISE
I saw it on the Discovery Channel.

MS. LANGE
(to class)
Denise is right. That’s actually
what happens.

DAVID WANG (10), Chinese boy sitting next to Denise, looks at her, impressed. It’s clear he likes her.
Denise perks up. She likes him, too. She turns and smiles at him.
Quickly, David looks away, frightened. Denise rolls her eyes, frustrated.
David raises his hand.

MS. LANGE (CONT’D)
Yes, David?

DAVID
Why didn’t the textbook explain
that?

MS. LANGE
I suppose the authors felt it was
too complicated for your grade
level.

DAVID
Even for a gifted class?

Ms. Lange shrugs. Denise raises her hand.

MS. LANGE
What is it now, Denise?

DENISE
Is patronizing and underestimating
the students’ abilities a sound
educational technique?

Ms. Lange shakes her head.

MS. LANGE
No, Denise. It’s not.

DENISE
I think as an educator, you should
be offended by that textbook.. I
am.

MS. LANGE
I’ll be sure to mention your
concerns to the principal.

DENISE
That won’t do any good, but go
ahead.

Just then, PRINCIPAL KNOCKS on the classroom door. Teacher motions for him to come in.

The PRINCIPAL ENTERS. He addresses the class.

PRINCIPAL
Just want to remind your class that
next week we’re going to be selling
cookies to raise money for our
annual field trip. The class with
the biggest sales will have a hot
dog party on Friday.

Class shows excitement and approval.
All, that is, except for Denise. Skeptical and disapproving, she raises her hand.
The Principal notices and stiffens reflexively. He acts as if he didn’t see her.

PRINCIPAL (CONT’D)
Good luck!

Just two feet away from him, Denise waves her arm in the air from side to side in a big arc.
The Principal turns and tries to hurry out of the room.

DENISE
(calls out)
Principal Jones! I have a
question!

The Principal stops, frustrated. So close. He almost made it. He turns and feigns surprise.

PRINCIPAL
I didn’t see your hand up there.
Yes, Denise. What is it?

DENISE
Don’t you think you’re sending the
wrong message to children by
promoting hot dog day?

The Principal grows serious and assumes an arrogant attitude.

PRINCIPAL
No, I sure don’t, young lady! I’m
not in the business of giving
children the wrong message!

Denise smiles happily.

DENISE
Oh, so we’re getting nitrite free
hot dogs!

Principal hesitates, confused.

PRINCIPAL
What?
校长
什么?

DENISE
Nitrite free.

He regains his composure and reassumes his arrogant and authoritarian demeanor.

PRINCIPAL
You’re getting regular hot dogs,
young lady. They’ll just have to
be good enough for you.

DENISE
Are you an authority figure?

Principal snorts, his arrogance increasing.

PRINCIPAL
You better believe I am.

DENISE
So as an authority figure you are
encouraging small children to
consume a product that contains
nitrites, which are known to be
carcinogenic.

The Principal examines Denise with a silent and hostile attitude for a moment. He knows she’s got him.

PRINCIPAL
Lighten up. One hot dog is not
going to kill you.

DENISE
(brightly)
Can we have beer with our hot dogs?
One beer won’ t kill us either.

The class laughs. The Principal’s anger increases. Ms. Lange bites her lip to avoid smiling.
The Principal swings around and exits.

INT. LISA’S BEDROOM – EVENING

LISA (late 20’s) applies lipstick in front of the mirror.
There’s a KNOCK on the door.

LISA
Come in, sweetheart.

DENISE, Lisa’s daughter, enters.

DENISE
Baby sitter’s here.

LISA
Good.
很好。

DENISE
I am quite capable of taking care
of myself.

LISA
Denise, please. We’ve been through
this. Not now.

Denise observes her mom closely as she applies makeup.
In a moment, she’s read her and figured out what’s going on.

DENISE
You’re falling for this guy, aren’t
you?

Lisa’s surprised.

LISA
Do you like Richard?

DENISE
How would I know? I’ve only met
him once. For some reason you keep
him away from me. I’m beginning to
think you don’t trust me.

Lisa gives Denise a candid look.

LISA
I just don’ t want to have men
coming in and out of your life,
honey. You need stability. I
don’t want you to become attached
to someone if he’s not going to
stick around.

DENISE
Don’t worry, mom. I’m resilient
and smart. I would become attached
only after a careful assessment of
the situation.

Lisa goes along and nods gravely.

LISA
That’s good to know.... So what
did you think of him?

DENISE
He seems tolerable.

LISA
Not a bad endorsement.

DENISE
I’m not as difficult as you think I
am, mom. People just don’t know
how to get along with me.

LISA
Like your last baby sitter.

DENISE
She had issues.

LISA
I’ m sure she has more, now.

DENISE
She was always trying to tell me
what to do. I don’t suffer control
freaks and manipulators.

Lisa shakes her head. The DOORBELL RINGS.

Richard and Lisa eat dinner.

LISA
What’s the great news?

RICHARD
You ready?

Lisa hesitates, nervous but doing her best to maintain her composure. She’s expecting a proposal. She gives him a glowing smile and nods.
He leans closer, giving her a meaningful look. Lisa’s almost bursting with anticipation.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
I’m going to be on the Today Show!
They’re coming to San Francisco
next week.

Her smile disappears.

LISA
Huh?
哈?

RICHARD
But that’s not all.. Newsweek is
going to write an article about my
book!

LISA
One great news right after another.

RICHARD
Hard to believe, isn’t it?

LISA
Oh, you’d be surprised the things I
can believe.

RICHARD
What do you mean?

She shakes her head.

LISA
I mean it’s a great book!

RICHARD
Really?
理查德
真的?

LISA
I used it on Denise.

RICHARD
The steps?

LISA
It has steps?

He gives her an uncertain look, which makes her smile.

LISA (CONT’D)
Of course, the steps, silly.

RICHARD
And they worked?

LISA
Yeah, actually, yes. They did.

RICHARD
Great! Today seems to be the
evening for good news. Ready for
one more?

Lisa perks up and smiles.

RICHARD (CONT’ D)
The chef made your favorite
dessert, Grand Marnier souffé!
Grand Marnier souffé(一种法国食品)!

She has to make a superhuman effort to maintain her smile.

LISA
The good news never ends!

The Waiter serves them dessert and coffee. Lisa takes a bite.

RICHARD
How is it?
理查德

LISA
Good.
很好。

She begins to CHOKE, turns red, GAGS violently. SLAPS table, KNOCKS wine glasses off. Customers turn to look.
Panicked, Richard jumps up and performs the Heimlich.
After a few thrusts an object flies out of her mouth.
He releases her and she collapses on the floor, exhausted and COUGHING.
Still out of breath, she looks at the object that was lodged in her throat - -

A DIAMOND RING.

RICHARD
Will you marry me?

She looks up at him in disbelief.

EXT. PARK - LATER THAT NIGHT

Richard and Lisa walk side by side.

RICHARD
When are you telling Denise?

LISA
Tonight.

RICHARD
So soon? I was thinking we get
married and after a month or so,
she’ll start picking up on the
clues.

LISA
Don’t worry. I think she likes
you.

He perks up.

RICHARD
(hopeful)
Really?

LISA
Yeah!... Sort of.

Richard sighs.

LISA (CONT’D)
What you two need is to bond more.

RICHARD
I agree.
理查德

Lisa stops and gives him a bright look.

LISA
I have a great idea! Why don’t you
look after Denise next week?

RICHARD
What!
理查德
什么!

LISA
I was going to take her to my
training, but she’d just be stuck
in a hotel room all week. Plus
she’ll miss school. This way, we
kill two birds with one stone.

He fumbles for a way out. After a moment, he’s got it.

RICHARD
What about your parents?

LISA
They’re in Europe.

RICHARD
(disappointed)
Oh, yeah.
理查德

LISA
So?
所以?

RICHARD
I don’t know, Lisa. You really
think it’s a good idea? I mean
right before our dinner with your
parents, the wedding and everything
else? It might be too overwhelming
for her.

LISA
It’s better to bond before, isn’t
it?

RICHARD
Technically.

She pauses, looking him in the eye.

LISA
I have to be honest, Richard. I
Wasn’t sure where our relationship
was going, so I purposely kept
Denise away from you. I didn’t
want her to get attached and then
be disappointed.

RICHARD
You did the right thing.

LISA
But now it’s a problem.

RICHARD
It’s not a problem.

LISA
Denise and I have been looking out
for each other for 10 years. She
can be difficult sometimes and as a
single mom, I need to know that she
is okay with you as her dad.

RICHARD
You doubt she might be?

LISA
I don’t. I think you’d make a
great dad.

RICHARD
I don’t understand.

LISA
She needs to know it, too.

RICHARD
So, you’re saying you won’t marry
me, unless your daughter likes me?

LISA
I accepted your proposal, didn’t I?

He nods, but remains confused.

LISA (CONT’D)
I’m saying it’s very important to
me you two get along well.

EXT. BALCONY OF RICHARD’S NEIGHBOR, BUTCH — DAY

BUTCH (40’s) with bathrobe, beard, and potbelly executes several awkward squats, retrieves a cigarette from an ashtray and puts it in his mouth.

BUTCH
I think I have a solution for your
problem.

Richard, standing on the balcony next door sipping a glass of tomato juice, looks at him, hopeful.

RICHARD
Yeah?

Butch beams with confidence.

BUTCH
You tell Lisa you can’t look after
Denise because you pulled a groin
muscle.

RICHARD
(beat)
Are you crazy!

BUTCH
Obsessive compulsives are not
crazy. You told me that.

RICHARD
I’m having second thoughts.

BUTCH
That’s only because you haven’t
thought this through the way I
have. You have s e x with Lisa,
you pull a groin muscle, you’re
homebound for a few days and can’t
look after Denise.

BUTCH (CONT'D)
Lisa feels guilty because she
contributed to the injury, and
you’re off the hook.

Richard shakes his head in disbelief.

RICHARD
How do you come up with these
things?

BUTCH
I don’t have a job. I’m stuck in my
apartment all day.

Richard thinks about it for a second.

RICHARD
I can’t.

Butch shrugs.

BUTCH
Okay.

INT. RICHARD’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

Richard and Lisa lie in bed together after s e x. Richard has a faraway look. Lisa looks at him, concerned.

LISA
You have something on your mind?

He looks at her for a moment.

RICHARD
Wanna go jogging tomorrow morning?

EXT. PARK – EARLY MORNING

Richard and Lisa jog down a trail. They round a bend and cross a bridge above a pond. Ahead of them - a small hill.

RICHARD
Race you up the hill.

LISA
No. I’m enjoying my nice slow jog.

RICHARD
(playfully)
Come on, don’t be a sissy.

LISA
Shuut uup.

RICHARD
Okay.... But you’re a prissy
little sissy.

LISA
Whatever.
什么……

Lisa points at a family of ducks on the side of the road.

LISA (CONT’D)
Oh, look!

As Richard turns to look, Lisa sprints ahead of him and races up the hill. Richard chases after her.
He catches up to her as they reach the top and collapses.
Lisa stops, concerned.

LISA (CONT’D)
Honey, what happened!

RICHARD
(grimacing)
I think I pulled a groin muscle.

INT. RICHARD’S APARTMENT - LATER THAT DAY

LISA
Let me get you a glass of juice.

RICHARD
Okay.
理查德
好的。

Lisa pours orange juice into a glass and brings it to him.
He takes a sip.
With Lisa’s help, Richard hobbles to couch and plops down with a groan.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
I’m really sorry, Lisa.

LISA
Don’t be silly!

RICHARD
I feel like I’m letting you down.

LISA
How?

RICHARD
I won’t be able to look after
Denise.

LISA
Oh, Denise! Yes. Don’t worry.

RICHARD
I’m sorry, Lisa.

LISA
You can still look after her.

Richard’s glass freezes halfway to his lips.

RICHARD
What?
理查德
什么?

LISA
She likes to play nurse. I think
it makes her feel in charge. This
works to our advantage.

RICHARD
How’s that?

LISA
You’ll have more time to bond.

RICHARD
That’s great. But who’s gonna
drive her to school.

LISA
My neighbor Betty. She’s gonna
pick her up here next week. Your
place is even closer to school.
Isn’t that a lucky coincidence?

RICHARD
Yeah, lucky.

EXT. BUTCH’S BALCONY – MORNING

Butch takes a drag on his cigarette and shakes his head.

BUTCH
It’s a bit of a snag.

PULL BACK:

Richard leans on the railing of his balcony.

RICHARD
I’m gonna have to limp for the next
week.

BUTCH
Not if we come up with another
excuse.

RICHARD
Uh, uh. No way.

Butch takes a long drag on his cigarette and strokes his beard with the back of his fingers. He pulls a cell phone from his bathrobe and begins to dial.

BUTCH
Just leave it to me.

RICHARD
What? What are you doing?

BUTCH
Calling Lisa.

RICHARD
Are you crazy!

BUTCH
(dialing)
Relax. It’ll work.

RICHARD
Hang up the phone! Hang up that –

BUTCH
(hoarse and faking a
stuffy nose)
Lisa? Hi, baby. It’s me.... No,
Richard.

Richard looks at Butch, horrified.

BUTCH (CONT’D)
Yeah. My nose is terribly
swollen...

Butch pauses, his body wracked with COUGHING spasms. He tries to continue speaking, but can’t. Eyes crossed, he WHEEZES, trying to catch his breath.
Richard looks at him, stupefied.
Butch begins to talk again in a shaky, raspy voice.

BUTCH (CONT’D)
Yeah, he let me borrow his phone.
He’s really a good neighbor and a
nice guy.... I agree. We need to
buy him a gift or something.

Butch is seized by COUGHING, WHEEZING spasms once more.
Richard makes a frantic motion for him to quit but to no avail.

BUTCH (CONT’D)
(weak voice)
Anyway, I don’t want Denise to
catch it.... Don’t worry. I just
need to rest.... Of course. Okay.
Love you too.... Bye.

Butch hangs up and looks at Richard, triumphant.

BUTCH (CONT’D)
You’re off the hook.

RICHARD
You’ve really gone too far this
time. You are seriously disturbed.

BUTCH
A simple “ thank you” would have
been enough.

RICHARD
Don’t you realize she may come
over?

BUTCH
Actually, she’ll be here within the
hour.

RICHARD
What!
理查德
什么!

BUTCH
All you have to do is cough and
sneeze a couple of times.

FOLLOW RICHARD INTO APARTMENT

As he races to pick up phone. He dials quickly.

RICHARD
Lisa, hi.... Yes, I know. That was
Butch.... It was a prank. Of
course, not. It was a prank on
both of us. Yes, I know he’s sick.
No. I know you can kick his ass,
honey.... Okay. Yes, I’ll tell
him. Bye.

There’s a KNOCK on door.

Richard opens it. Butch enters. He walks to couch and sits down.

BUTCH
It would’ve worked, too.

Richard observes him in silence.

RICHARD
You know you have a lot of nerve
for someone who’s afraid to leave
his apartment.

BUTCH
I’m a complicated guy.

Richard sighs and sits next to Butch.

RICHARD
I guess there’ s no way out of it
now.

BUTCH
She’ s just a little girl.

RICHARD
What?
理查德
唔?

BUTCH
You’re an excellent child
psychiatrist. She’s a child. She
doesn’t have a prayer.

RICHARD
Well, I am a good psychiatrist.

BUTCH
Good? You’re outstanding.

RICHARD
Nah. . . Outstanding? Really?
理查德
真的?

BUTCH
Six months ago I couldn’t leave my
apartment. Now, I’m walking down
the hallway and knocking on your
door.

Richard grins with confidence.

RICHARD
You’re right. What am I worried
about?

Butch smiles.

BUTCH
She’ll be putty in your hands.

RICHARD
The poor girl doesn’t know what
She’s getting into.

They both laugh.

INT. LISA’S CAR – EVENING

Lisa drives. Denise sits next to her.

LISA
Remember what we talked about?

DENISE
That’s patronizing, mom.

LISA
That’s exactly the attitude I’m
worried about, Denise.

DENISE
I’ll be on my best behavior. Don’t
worry.

LISA
Good.
很好。

DENISE
So, where are we going to eat?

LISA
I don’t know where Richard is
taking us, honey.

DENISE
Well, I hope it doesn’t give you
diarrhea, just before your flight.

LISA looks at her daughter disapprovingly.
Denise shakes her head.

DENISE (CONT’D)
It’s a joke, mom. You should try
it with Richard. Men like a woman
with a sense of humor.

LISA
I’ll keep that in mind.

DENISE
So, why can’t I go home with you?

LISA
(annoyed, she’s answered
this question before)
I have to get up at three....
Nervous about your first night?

DENISE
There’s really nothing to be
nervous about. I adapt well to
change.

LISA
(nods)
Of course.

INT. RICHARD’S OFFICE – CONTINUOUS – EVENING

A Mother and a Little Boy step out of the waiting room into the hallway just as Lisa and Denise arrive.
Lisa and Denise enter waiting room.
Lisa KNOCKS on Richard’ s door. Door opens.

RICHARD
You’re early! Hi, Denise!

DENISE
(underwhelmed)
Hi.

LISA
We can just wait in the lobby.

RICHARD
No, no. My last patient just left.
We can go eat right now. You like

DENISE
(brightly)
You mean, like pizza!

RICHARD
(smiles)
Yeah!
理查德
对!

Denise grows serious.

DENISE
No. It’s not a balanced meal.

LISA
Denise, you promised you wouldn’t
be difficult.

DENISE
I was being truthful, but I see how
you could have misinterpreted. So,
I apologize.

Denise assumes a bright and cheerful attitude again.

DENISE (CONT’D)
Yes, Richard. I would love some
pizza. What kid wouldn’t?

Denise rolls her eyes, almost imperceptibly. She knows Richard is trying to win her over, and she’s not buying it.
Richard changes tactics.

RICHARD
You like seafood?

Denise nods.

LISA
She loves it. Don’t you, Denise?

Denise cracks a smile and nods again.

RICHARD
It’s settled then. I know a great
seafood place. Let’s go.

Lisa looks at Denise.

LISA
I want to talk to Richard in
private for five minutes, honey.
Can you go wait outside?

DENISE
In the hallway!

RICHARD
She can wait in my office.

He opens office door. Denise steps in and Richard closes door.

LISA
There’s a few things about Denise
you should know.

Richard smiles, knowingly.

RICHARD
I know, Lisa. She’s very
precocious, very smart, and she
wants to be treated as an adult.
Right?

LISA
(surprised)
Well, yes, but –

RICHARD
Honey, no matter how smart she is,
She’s still a child. All children
are basically the same. They are
all motivated by the same things.
They all want approval and
attention.

LISA
I’m sure you’re right, but she
knows she’s smart and she’s got
this thing about being talked down
to.

Richard smiles with confidence.

RICHARD
Honey, I know. That’s my job.
Don’t worry. I can handle it. I’m
a child psychiatrist. She’s a
child.

Lisa smiles, reassured.

INT. RICHARD’S OFFICE – CONTINUOUS – EVENING

Denise finds Richard’s book, Three Steps to a Well Adjusted Child, on top of his desk and begins to skim through it.
The title of a chapter catches her attention. It reads:
“Controlling Your Child’s Behavior.”
She begins to read carefully. Her eyes focus on a sentence:
“Careful manipulation of parental attention is a surefire way to control a child’s behavior.”
She reads out loud.

DENISE
By manipulating the type and amount
of attention, a parent can quickly
achieve the desired behavior in a
child.

Denise turns the page and runs her finger down a list titled,
“Behavior Modification Techniques.”
She looks up.

DENISE (CONT’D)
He’s been poisoning my mother with
pseudo-psychology!

INT. SEAFOOD RESTAURANT – CONTINUOUS – EVENING

Richard, Lisa, and Denise eat dinner. Richard and Lisa talk and enjoy each other. Denise stares from one to the other, with a serious, deadpan look.
Waiter clears table after all three have finished their entrees.

RICHARD
They have delicious desserts here,
Denise. How about it?

Denise gives Richard a deadpan look.

DENISE
I’m not easily fooled by
appearances.

RICHARD
What?
理查德
什么?

DENISE
I don’t like fake anything.

Richard and Lisa exchange perplexed looks for a moment.

DENISE (CONT’D)
Desserts are fake food. They look
and taste good, but they’ re
actually poison.

RICHARD
(nods)
I see. Okay. Can’t argue with
that.

INT. LISA’S CAR – CONTINUOUS – NIGHT

Lisa drives with Richard next to her. Denise sits in the back.
Richard half turns to talk to Denise.

RICHARD
Did you like the restaurant,
Denise?

Denise thinks it over. Lisa looks at her in the rearview mirror.

LISA
You were really quiet the whole
meal, honey. Don’t keep us in
suspense. What’s the verdict?

DENISE
Well, since I have a low tolerance
for run of the mill disguised as
new and original, I have to say I
was pleasantly surprised at the
choice.

Richard smiles broadly.

RICHARD
We have an endorsement!

He and Lisa exchange a look as if to say, “Isn’t she cute.”
Denise stares at them with the same deadly serious, deadpan look.

EXT. RICHARD’ S APARTMENT BUILDING – MINUTES LATER

Lisa hugs Denise goodbye.

LISA
See you in a week, honey. I’m sure
you and Richard will have a blast
together.

Denise nods gravely.

DENISE
Oh, we will.

Pleased, Richard and Lisa exchange a smile.
Lisa waves a final goodbye as she walks to her car.

INT. RICHARD’S APARTMENT – CONTINUOUS – NIGHT

Richard and Denise enter. Richard turns on lights.
Denise removes her pink backpack and examines her surroundings, noticing a large aquarium with a small shark and other exotic fish built into the wall.
Proud, Richard smiles.

RICHARD
Catches your eye, doesn’t it?

Denise nods.

DENISE
Not in a good way.

His smile vanishes.

RICHARD
You don’t like it?

DENISE
It’s too big for your apartment.
But it’d be a great exhibit in a
museum of natural history.

Richard nods, unsure of what to say.

RICHARD
Thank you for your honesty.

DENISE
(casual matter-of-
factness)
You’re welcome.

Something moves inside Denise’s backpack, catching Richard’s attention. Just then, the head of a ferret pops out of an opening in the zipper.
Richard jumps back.

RICHARD
Jesus! What’s that?

DENISE
Stanley.

RICHARD
I take it, you didn’t tell your
mother you were bringing Stanley.

DENISE
I told her.

RICHARD
You told her?

She nods.

DENISE
She said no.

Richard sighs.

RICHARD
Well, don’t worry about it.

DENISE
I’m not worried.

RICHARD
Good. It’ll be our secret....
Does he bite?

DENISE
Only if he doesn’t know you.

RICHARD
Great.
理查德

Denise pulls Stanley out of her backpack.
Stanley examines his surroundings. He focuses on Richard and half rises to get a better look at him.
Richard takes a step back.

DENISE
Animals interpret fear as
aggression.

RICHARD
I’m not afraid. I just got
startled. He looked at me kinda
mean.

Denise pulls a v ideo recorder from her backpack.

DENISE
If he decides to take you out, you
can always use careful manipulation
of attention to control his
behavior.

She focuses the camera on Stanley, who looks up at her expectantly, and then on Richard who stares at her, mouth slightly open and a dumb look on his face.

INT. KITCHEN – MINUTES LATER

Richard pours herbal tea into a cup.
He sits at the table next to Denise, who already has a cup.
He opens the sugar bowl.

RICHARD
One or two?

DENISE
Half.

Richard pours half a teaspoon in her cup and two in his.

RICHARD
So, what’s with the v ideo recorder?

DENISE
I’m president of the Young
Directors of America Club.

RICHARD
Oh, you’re going to be a director!

DENISE
That’s just a hobby. I’m going to
be a particle physicist. I’m
planning to work on a unified field
theory for gravity and
electromagnetism.

RICHARD
That’ s nice.

Denise shakes her head.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
What?

DENISE
Your attempt at positive
reinforcement is feeble. It sounds
patronizing. You need to work on
your delivery.

Richard thinks it over. She’s right.

RICHARD
Maybe.... How much of my book did
you read?

DENISE
The whole thing.
全部。

RICHARD
You were just there, ten, fifteen
minutes.

DENISE
I’m a speed reader.

RICHARD
You can’t really understand it like
that. You have to study it.

DENISE
It’s not exactly Stephen Hawkin’s A
Brief History of Time.

RICHARD
(unconvinced)
You read that?

DENISE
I wrote a book report on it.

Richard smiles, still unconvinced.

RICHARD
What’s your opinion?

DENISE
It has good insights, but I don’t
agree with some of his
speculations.

RICHARD
Such as?
理查德
例如?

DENISE
He doesn’t have enough evidence to
speculate that black holes lead to
alternate universes. To be fair,
though, he dropped that speculation
in 2004.

Richard’s taken aback, unsure of how to respond. Finally, he nods.

RICHARD
Yeah.
理查德
是的。

DENISE
You didn’t read it, did you?

RICHARD
(shakes head)
No.
理查德

DENISE
Figures.

RICHARD
You know, I’m not the hack you
think I am. I happen to be an
excellent psychiatrist.

DENISE
Because you follow a formula?

RICHARD
Not just because of that.

She stares at him silently for several seconds.

DENISE
I don’t like you.

RICHARD
Why?
理查德

DENISE
I don’t like control freaks.

RICHARD
It’ s not control. It’s therapy.

DENISE
That’s a more convenient term. My
Mother’s last boyfriend was a user
and a manipulator, just like you.

RICHARD
Hey, I happen to love your mother
very much. I don’t want to control
her or use her.

DENISE
Okay.

RICHARD
What’s that supposed to mean?

DENISE
It means it doesn’t matter.

RICHARD
What!... Why?
理查德

DENISE
Because you’re not going to marry
her.

Richard laughs.

RICHARD
I love your mother, and I’m going
to marry her. You’ll have to get
used to the idea, little girl.

DENISE
That won’t be necessary. I’m going
to stop the wedding from happening
in the first place.

RICHARD
(amused)
Oh, really? What makes you think
you can do that?

DENISE
I’m smarter than you.

Richard laughs once more. He thinks she’s cute.

RICHARD
You are smart. But you’re just a
kid. I’m a grown-up. And an M.D.
And a psychiatrist.

DENISE
And a control freak.

Richard sips tea, unconcerned.

RICHARD
Regardless of whether you like me,
you still have to follow rules
around here. Going to bed early,
brushing your teeth, taking a bath,
picking up after yourself....

She looks at him as though he’s a bit slow.

DENISE
If I stay up late or don’t brush my
teeth, I’d just be hurting myself.

He smiles. Maybe he’s getting through to her after all.

RICHARD
That’s right!
理查德
对!

Denise smiles, sweetly.

DENISE
I don’t want to hurt myself... I
want to hurt you.

His smile disappears.

DENISE (CONT’D)
By the way, a little better on the
delivery. But it still sounds a
bit patronizing.

He clears his throat and looks at his watch.

RICHARD
It’s getting late. I’ll get your
bed ready.

INT. RICHARD’S LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS – NIGHT

The love seat in front of the aquarium sports fresh linen, a blanket and a pillow. Richard and Denise stand beside it.
He gestures with his arm like a model showing off a brand new car.

RICHARD
What do you think?
理查德

DENISE
Might be a tad small. But you’ll
manage.

RICHARD
It’s for you.

DENISE
I’m a growing child. I need a bed.

RICHARD
I’m sorry, but I only have one bed.

He looks at her as if to say, “That’s too bad..” She gives him a silent, serious look in return.

INT. RICHARD’S BEDROOM – LATER THAT NIGHT

Denise is fast asleep. Fifty-five pounds in a king-sized bed.

IN THE LIVINGROOM

Richard stares at the ceiling. Six feet cramped into a love seat.

INT. RICHARD’S OFFICE – DAY

Sitting behind his desk, Richard tries to rub the sleep out of his eyes. RECEPTIONIST talks on intercom.

RECEPTIONIST (V.O.)
Tommy Sciola’s here, Dr. Utterman.

RICHARD
(to self)
Oh, God!
(sighs)
Let’s not delay the inevitable.
(presses button)
Send him in.

MRS. SCIOLA (O.S.)
Put that down! It’s not yours!..
Stop bothering the receptionist!
Don’t poke the lady!

TOMMY (O.S.)
You’re limiting my freedom. You
Can’t do that. I’m an America!

MRS. SCIOLA (O.S.)
Shut up! Get in there!

TOMMY, 10 (think Louie De Palma meets Dennis the Menace) enters, accompanied by his mother, MRS. SCIOLA.

MRS. SCIOLA (CONT’D)
Hello, Dr. Utterman.

He rises.

RICHARD
How are you today, Mrs. Sciola?

She looks at her son, and then at him as though he’s just asked the stupidest question in the history of stupid questions.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
Right.... Sorry. What has he done
since I saw you last?

MRS. SCIOLA
Well, where shall we start?....

RICHARD
That bad?

MRS. SCIOLA
What if I tell you what he did
since this morning.

RICHARD
Okay.
理查德
好的。

He motions for them to sit. They do, and he follows suit.

MRS. SCIOLA
He shaved the cat, but not before
gathering all his droppings and
putting them in the brownie batter
for the bake sale.

RICHARD
Bake sale?

MRS. SCIOLA (V.O.)
Uh huh. I was so pleased when he
volunteered to bake brownies for
his school’s bake sale. He even
got up at 5:00 this morning. I
thought, “Great! His therapy’s
working!” Then I get a call from
school.

FLASHBACK TO:

INT. TOMMY SCIOLA’S BEDROOM – MORNING

Tommy jumps out of bed eagerly.

CUT TO:

INT. KITCHEN – MOMENTS LATER

Wearing chef’s cap and smiling from ear to ear, Tommy dumps cat droppings in brownie batter and turns on mixer.

BACK TO:

INT. RICHARD’S OFFICE – DAY

Tommy smirks and blows a huge bubble with his gum. His mother glances at him. She pops the bubble with her finger, flattening it on his face.

RICHARD
So, they caught it in time.

MRS. SCIOLA
Uh, uh. No, sir. Those cookies
sold like pancakes. Even the
principal ate some.

FLASHBACK TO:

INT. TOMMY’S SCHOOL – MORNING

The Principal bites into a cookie with a shit-eating grin.
He pats Tommy on the back to congratulate him.

BACK TO:

RICHARD’S OFFICE – DAY

RICHARD
(confused)
So?...
理查德

MRS.SCIOLA
How did they find out? Tommy gave
his teacher the recipe. Along with
a sample of the secret ingredient.

RICHARD
I see.

Mrs. Sciola and Richard exchange silent looks. Tommy begins to blow another bubble. His mother glances at him. He quickly cuts the bubble short before she has a chance to pop it again.

MRS.SCIOLA
(to Richard)
What do you think?

RICHARD
My explanation’s still the same.
No matter how outrageous his
behavior, he is motivated by the
same thing that motivates all
children.

MRS. SCIOLA
So you’re saying Tommy’s just like
any other kid?

RICHARD
That’ s right.
理查德
对。

MRS. SCIOLA
Even my sister’s 10 year old who’s
an honor student, sings in the
choir and volunteers at the
homeless shelter?

RICHARD
They are exactly the same.

Tommy’s mouth drops. He glances at his mother in disbelief.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
Your son wants attention, just like
your nephew. There’s only one
difference. Your nephew’s learned
to get attention by getting good
grades and singing in the choir.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
On the other hand, your son’s
learned to get it by putting cat
crap in cookies.

MRS. SCIOLA
(beat)
I guess that makes sense.

RICHARD
All we have to do is teach him he
can get more rewarding attention by
acting better.

Mrs. Sciola nods. Richard opens a drawer and pulls out a copy of his book.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
My book shows you step by step how
to change his behavior.

She takes the book and looks at it with interest.

INT. RICHARD’S BEDROOM – DAY

Seated behind a desk, Denise edits film on a computer.
Richard enters.

RICHARD
What are you working on?

Denise continues to edit, but screen is out of view.

DENISE
Class project.

RICHARD
Can I see it?

DENISE
(nods)
When it’s done.

RICHARD
Great.... how was school today?

DENISE
Okay.
很好。

RICHARD
What did you learn?

DENISE
Small talk’s not going to win me
over. You’re just wasting my time
and yours.

RICHARD
What will win you over?
(sarcastic)
Cookies and ice cream?

DENISE
If it’ s to celebrate my mother
breaking up with you, then yes.
But make it vanilla.

RICHARD
You made up your mind about me,
just like that, huh? You won’t
even give me a chance.

Denise is silent. Richard’s eyes brighten a little. Maybe his words had an effect.

DENISE
An appeal to my sense of fairness
Won’t work either.

It’s Richard’s turn to be silent. He pulls up a chair and sits near Denise, assuming a therapeutic demeanor.

RICHARD
I understand how you feel. You
have doubts about whether I’m good
enough for your mom. I can respect
that. Your mom’s a very special
lady.... If you give me a chance,
though, you’ll find out I’m a
pretty cool guy.

Denise stops what she’s doing and looks up.

DENISE
You’re not cool.

RICHARD
Yeah, I am.

DENISE
You don’t even dress cool.

Richard smiles. Maybe he’s stumbled on something he can use for leverage.

RICHARD
I can dress cool.

Denise smiles a little.

EXT. GROCERY PARKING LOT – DAY

Car parks. Richard and Denise step out.
Richard’s dressed like a teen punk in baggy clothes. He looks like a cross between a middle-aged rapper and a pimp.
Denise is dressed like a cute and innocent schoolgirl, with a yellow bow in her hair. They walk toward store entrance.
Richard’s walk doesn’t fit his dress. He walks formally and with purpose like a waspy businessman.

DENISE
You need to work on your walk.

RICHARD
Not cool enough?

DENISE
You walk like an accountant.

Richard begins to swing his arms and strut.

RICHARD
How’s this?
理查德

Denise pats his back.

DENISE
Much better.

He smiles, proud.

INT. GROCERY STORE – CONTINUOUS – DAY

Richard and Denise enter. An Elderly Woman pushing a cart looks at them with an open mouth and runs into someone else’s cart.
Richard and Denise make their way through the aisles, picking food. People turn to look after they pass.
Denise gets a box from a shelf.

DENISE
We’re low on sugar.

RICHARD
We don’t want that. That’s
caffeine powder.

She puts it back on the shelf.
They arrive at produce section.
Denise looks at huge pile of oranges stacked neatly in a pyramid on a table.

DENISE
Can I get some oranges?

RICHARD
Sure.... I’ll get apples while you
do that.

Richard begins to put apples in a bag.
Denise walks to the orange pyramid, sticks her arm in near the bottom and jerks it out.
A cascade of oranges comes tumbling down and begins to roll rapidly down the aisle.
Flabbergasted and frozen stiff, Richard stares.
Denise walks up to him and hands him the orange she pulled out.

DENISE
I guess this is the only good one,
now.

Just then the same Elderly Woman pushing cart steps on an orange, SCREAMS and falls down.
As she falls, Elderly Lady pushes her cart forward.
The cart strikes a stand of apples. Apples tumble to the floor and roll down the aisle.

FAT MAN slips on an apple.
He puts out his hands to avoid falling, grabbing onto a Middle-Aged Woman and a Teen-Aged Girl.
The Fat Man brings both of them down with him.
The Teen-Aged Girl lets out a HIGH PITCHED SCREAM.

A Tall Man comes running in response to the scream, slides first on an apple, then on an orange, and falls on top of all three.
Produce Manager comes running around corner.
He slams into Fat Man just at the instant Fat Man is back on his feet.
Produce Manager falls down, hitting head on fruit stand and knocking himself out.

Fat Man reaches out to catch his balance, grabbing Teen-Aged Girl and Middle-Aged Woman once more, who have just gotten up.
Middle-Aged woman falls to floor again, but Teen-Aged Girl grabs the back of Tall Man’s shirt as he tries to get up, pulling him back onto floor.
Teen-Aged Girl then falls forward onto a stand of watermelons.
Watermelons come tumbling down and roll down the aisle.

Store Manager (large ex-football player type) comes running down the aisle with authority, deftly dodging the watermelons.
When it looks like he’s dodged all the watermelons, he steps on the last one, slips and slides, but confidently regains his balance only to...
Step on an orange.
He slips again but, still confident, stays on his feet.
As he is about to regain control, he steps on an apple. He fights to keep his balance, but to no avail.
He flies through the air with a “what can I do” look of resignation...
CRASHING into a coconut display, sending the coconuts rolling down the aisle.

Teen-Aged Girl, Tall Man, and Middle-Aged Woman are about to get up again, but the Fat Man moves his hand to dissuade them.

FAT MAN
Better wait.

Frozen stiff, Richard stares at the scene in horror, with Denise by his side.
As the fruit comes to a stop, several customers and two attendants hurry to the scene.
Just as they get there, Denise points at Richard, who’s still holding the orange in his hand.

DENISE
He was trying to be cool.

Everybody looks at Richard with unmasked disdain.

EXT. GROCERY STORE – CONTINUOUS – DAY

Two attendants forcefully escort Richard out of the store.
Denise walks out behind them, as if nothing happened.

DENISE
Wanna try another store?

Richard stares down at her, a horrible and frightening realization gripping him. Theme Song from The Exorcist plays.
Denise smiles at him sweetly.

INT. BUTCH’ S APARTMENT – AFTERNOON

Butch pours strong black coffee in a cup and hands it to a worn-out looking Richard. Richard looks up as he takes the cup. He has dark circles under his eyes.

RICHARD
(taking cup)
Thanks.

Butch pours himself half a cup and sits down next to Richard.

BUTCH
Still battling insomnia?

RICHARD
I haven’t gotten more than three
hours of sleep in the last two
days.

BUTCH
Denise?

Richard resents the question and the implication.

BUTCH (CONT’D)
You’re letting her get to you too
much.

RICHARD
She’s not getting to me at all!
I’m a trained professional.

BUTCH
Maybe she’s getting to you a little
if you can’t sleep.

RICHARD
It’s not her, it’s the damn love
seat.

BUTCH
Kick her out of your bed. Make her
sleep in the love seat.

RICHARD
(shakes head)
That’s what she wants. Then,
She’ll twist it around someway,
somehow and make me look like a
creep with Lisa.

Butch sips coffee, thinking it over.

BUTCH
You’re right. You know, you’re one
smart guy. That’s why you’re a
famous psychiatrist.

RICHARD
Not yet. And she’s smart, too.

BUTCH
She can’t match wits with you.

RICHARD
Don’t underestimate her. She’s a
kid, but she’s got the brains of an
adult. And she can be as tricky as
an adult too.

BUTCH
(laughs)
Well, she sure tricked you
yesterday.

Richard gives Butch a hostile look. He stops laughing and becomes serious.

BUTCH (CONT’D)
Sorry.

They sip their coffee in silence.

BUTCH (CONT’D)
I have an idea. Why don’t you take
her shopping? Girls love shopping.
You’ll get on her good side,
guaranteed!

RICHARD
And give her the chance to have me
arrested for shoplifting? No,
thanks.

BUTCH
She caught you off guard. You know
what you’re dealing with now.

RICHARD
I’m not dealing with anything.
She’s staying in my apartment until
her mother comes back.

Butch sips his coffee, and looks up after a moment.

BUTCH
Couldn’t she use that against you?

RICHARD
What do you mean?

BUTCH
You’re supposed to be bonding.
Instead, you’re going to keep her
locked up in your apartment the
whole time.

RICHARD
She’s not locked up.... She should
be.

BUTCH
Just popped into my head. I’m
probably wrong.

RICHARD
(beat)
No, no. You’re right. I can’t
keep her inside the whole time.
Denise’d really go to town with
that one. Everything has to appear
normal when Lisa gets back.

He sips coffee.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
I’ll just have to keep one step
ahead of her. Thanks, Butch.

BUTCH
No problem.

INT. MALL – DAY

Richard and Denise make their way through Macy’s. Denise is carrying a package and wearing her pink backpack.

DENISE
Thanks for the sneakers.

RICHARD
You’ re welcome.
理查德

DENISE
You understand, that doesn’t change
anything between us.

RICHARD
I know. You still don’t like me
and you’re still going to get me.
And you can’t be bought by material
goods because you’re not a gold
digger in training. You are a
woman of principle. Did I leave
anything out?

DENISE
No.... Except I didn’t say
“woman.” I said “person.”
Don’t try to make me sound
ridiculous. I know I’m only ten.

RICHARD
Yeah. Ten going on thirty.

DENISE
Just because I’m smarter than you,
Doesn’t mean I’m not an innocent
little girl. Or they didn’t teach
you that at Harvard?

RICHARD
I must have been absent that day.

Richard and Denise wait in line to place order. To the left of the line customers mill about awaiting their orders.
Richard reaches the counter. A cute CHINESE GIRL smiles at him.

CHINESE GIRL
May I take your order, sir?

RICHARD
Does the seafood special have
ginger?

CHINESE GIRL
Yes.

RICHARD
All your seafood has ginger?

CHINESE GIRL
We cook all fish with ginger for
get rid of fishy smell and for
balance. But if you would like we
can not put.

RICHARD
Yes, please. Ginger upsets my
stomach and makes me use the
restroom.
(smiles and makes running
motion with fingers)

Chinese Girl nods.

CHINESE GIRL
Okay, no problem.
(hands him ticket)
Order number 27.

RICHARD
Xie xie.

CHINESE GIRL

RICHARD
A little bit. I can say “thank
you.” “You’re Welcome.” Count
ten.

CHINESE GIRL
(smiles)
Very good.

Denise steps up to counter. She speaks to the Chinese Girl in fluent Chinese.

DENISE
(in Chinese)
Qing ba wo de haixian duo jia xie
jiang. Wo de xiaohua neng li ba ta
qiang.

Chinese Girl laughs with surprise at how well Denise speaks Chinese. Richard looks down at Denise, mouth slightly open and a dumb look on his face.

CHINESE GIRL
(to Richard)
Your daughter very cute. She ask
for extra ginger. She say her
stomach stronger.

DENISE
Ta bu shi wo baba. Ta shi wo mama
de qian nanpengyou.

CHINESE GIRL
Oh!

RICHARD
What did she say?

CHINESE GIRL
She say, you are not her father.
You are her mother’s ex-boyfriend.

He looks at Denise. She’s gotten him again. Chinese Girl hands Denise a ticket.

DENISE
Fei chang xie.

CHINESE GIRL
Bu yong xie.

RICHARD
(to Denise)
What?

DENISE
I said “thank you” and she said
“you’re welcome.” Aren’ t those
two of the three things you know in

RICHARD
I learned it a different way.

Richard and Denise move to left of counter to wait for food.
Arms crossed, Richard examines Denise in silence.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
Let me guess. You’re president of
the Chinese club at your school.

DENISE
We don’t have a Chinese club, but
Miss Li says I’m the best student
in her Advanced Chinese class.

RICHARD
Of course, you are.

Slightly ticked off, Richard takes a step toward the counter, so he won’t have to look at Denise while they wait.
Pleased that she’s gotten to him, Denise smiles. She pulls a v ideo camera out of her backpack and looks around the place.
THROUGH CAMERA we see seated at a table 30 yards away, three enormous Black Men sharing a large pizza.
Denise glances at Richard, who is still ignoring her, then back at the Men and smiles.
She puts v ideo camera away and walks over to their table.

DENISE
Hi.

BLACK MAN #1
Hi, there.

DENISE
You guys are huge.

The Men smile and look at one another.

BLACK MAN #1
(confidentially)
I know.... Don’t tell anybody,
though. It’s a secret.

Denise smiles.

DENISE
Are you like superheroes or
something?

The Men laugh. Black Man #2 points at his companions.

BLACK MAN #2
Meet the Gut and Captain Fat Ass.
I’m Long John Silver.

Black Man #3 pokes him with his elbow.

BLACK MAN #3
Nigger, watch your language!
What’s wrong wid you! She’s my
Daughter’s age.

BLACK MAN #2
(to Denise)
Sorry, baby. You didn’t hear
Nothin’.

DENISE
That’s okay. I know it was
something dirty from his
reaction... but I didn’t understand
it, so you’re off the hook.

Black Man #2 laughs. The other two Men exchange smiles.

BLACK MAN #2
(to friends)
She’s pretty cool.
(to Denise)
You’re a cool customer, you know
that?

DENISE
I know.
明白。

The Men smile again. They think she’s cute.

BLACK MAN #3
We play football. I’m an offensive
tackle. These two dull looking
individuals here are defensive
tackles.

DENISE
You’re with the 49ers?

BLACK MAN #3
Yep.
对。

DENISE
Woh! Can I have your autographs?

BLACK MAN #3
Sure.

The Men take turns writing their names on a napkin. Denise watches them.

DENISE
Maybe you can help me with
something.

BLACK MAN #3
Sure. What is it?

DENISE
Are you from West Africa?

He stops writing and looks at her, surprised.

BLACK MAN #3
I’m from Pittsburgh.

DENISE
Oh, I know. What I meant is, is it
true that most African Americans
have their roots in West Africa?

The Men look at each other puzzled. Black Man #3 shrugs.

BLACK MAN #3
You got me. I really don’t know.

BLACK MAN #1
Seems to me I did hear something
like that. Yeah, I think most
African Americans do come from West
Africa.

Black Man #2 looks at him.

BLACK MAN #2
For real?
真的?

BLACK MAN #1
Yeah, man. You need to watch more
Discovery.

DENISE
Hmmm. You guys don’t look like
lamebrains at all.

The Men exchange surprised looks.

BLACK MAN #3
What do you mean?

DENISE
My mom’s boyfriend over there,
(points at Richard)
says that Obama’s smart because his
dad’s from East Africa. He says
African Americans come from West
Africa and that West Africans are
all dumb asses.

BLACK MAN #2
Oh, is that what he said?

Deadly serious, the Men look over at Richard.

DENISE
I know he’s wrong. I tried to tell
him, but he just screams at me.

The Men exchange looks, their hostility increasing.

DENISE (CONT’D)
Can you have a talk with him?
Maybe he’ll listen to you guys?

Standing at the counter oblivious to what’s happening, Richard picks up his food and turns to look for Denise. Nowhere in sight. He searches nervously, looking all around and then spots her, talking to the Men.
His eyes narrow with suspicion. She points at him and the Men fix their gaze on him.
He watches as the three Hulking Giants rise and begin walking toward him, a sweet looking Denise leading the way.

RICHARD
(to self)
Good God almighty!

Richard stares at the scene, frozen like a deer in the headlights of a semi and knowing there’s nothing he can do about it.
Two of the Men stand on either side of Richard and one in front.
The Men look down at Richard without saying a word.
Denise pulls camcorder from backpack and points it at them.
Richard looks at one of the Men eye to chest and tilts his head back to see his face.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
How’s it going?

BLACK MAN #3
I hear you think Obama’s a pretty
smart guy.

Richard fumbles. He sure didn’t expect that one.

RICHARD
Yeah, sure. I think he’s pretty
smart.

BLACK MAN #2
Because his dad’s from East Africa?

Richard hesitates, even more confused. He thinks about how to respond, and then finally happy with his choice, smiles broadly.

RICHARD
Absolutely!
理查德
正是!

The Men exchange looks, thoroughly convinced now Richard’s a racist.

BLACK MAN #2
If this little girl wasn’t
watching, I’d smack you so hard,
your shoes would stay on the ground
while your head bounced off the
ceiling.

Richard’s more nervous and confused than ever. He wants to say something, but is afraid of sticking his foot in it even more.

BLACK MAN #1
We are from West Africa. What do
you have to say about that?

RICHARD
(beat)
Welcome to America?

Black Man #2 is about to go off on Richard, but Black Man #3 raises his hand and stops him.

BLACK MAN #3
Look man, I don’t care what you
believe, but this is a sweet,
innocent little girl, so don’t
poison her mind with your bullshit.

Denise looks up at Richard and smiles, all sweetness and innocence. Richard has no idea what they’re talking about, but fearful, decides he better agree.

RICHARD
(shakes head quickly
several times)
I won’t.

BLACK MAN #3
I gave Denise my phone number. If
I find out you screamed at her...

Richard nods quickly and exaggeratedly several times, corrects, then shakes head quickly several times.

RICHARD
I won’t scream.

BLACK MAN #3
If you do, you and I will be seeing
each other again. Understand?

Richard shakes his head quickly, corrects, then nods quickly.

RICHARD
I understand....
理查德

The three Men walk away. Richard looks down at Denise.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
Who are you going to show that
v ideo to?

DENISE
Nobody. It’s for my own
entertainment.

She imitates his exaggerated head nodding and shaking.

RICHARD
Well, I don’t know how you did
that, but you’re quite a little
manipulator.

DENISE
I read your book...
(hands him autographed
napkin)
You can have this. I don’t like
football too much.

Richard stares at her incomprehensibly.

INT. RICHARD’S KITCHEN – THAT NIGHT

Water boils in a pot. Richard removes the pot from the stove and pours the water in a tea cup.

INT. DINING ROOM – CONTINUOUS – NIGHT

Denise opens container of caffeine powder and mixes three teaspoons into the sugar bowl.

RICHARD
(calls out from kitchen)
Have you seen the sugar, Denise?

DENISE
It’s right here on the table.

RICHARD
Okay.... Would you like a cup of
tea?

DENISE
No thanks. It’ll keep me up all
night.

RICHARD
It’s herb tea. No caffeine. Makes
you sleep better.

DENISE
Okay.

Richard and Denise sit at the dining room table. Richard reaches for the sugar bowl and dumps two full teaspoons in his tea. He fills a third teaspoon and offers it to Denise.

RICHARD
One or two?

DENISE
Zero. Sugar gives you a fat ass.

RICHARD
You don’t need to be concerned
about a fat ass at your age. But
suit yourself.

He puts the sugar back in the bowl, takes a sip of tea, and looks at Denise in a casual and friendly way.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
So, wanna go for a run at the park
with me tomorrow morning?

Denise sips her tea calmly, puts the cup down and looks at Richard.

DENISE
You can’t outsmart me, so you want
to outrun me. That’s very
childish.

Richard grows serious. No need to put on an act. She’s on to him. He leans forward on the table and looks her in the eye.

RICHARD
What’s the matter? You scared?

They stare at each other in silence, each sizing up the other.

DENISE
What time tomorrow morning?

RICHARD
Six o’clock.
理查德
6点。

DENISE
Make it five..
5点。

RICHARD
You’re on!

INT. LIVING ROOM – LATER THAT NIGHT

Richard lies cramped in his love seat, wide awake, staring at the ceiling with a blank expression. He turns his head to look at the clock on the coffee table: 4:00 A.M. He looks away and continues to stare at the ceiling with the same blank expression.

INT. LIVING ROOM – EARLY MORNING

Richard rises. He looks terrible. To boot, his back is all crooked from lying in the love seat. He takes a few short steps, holding his lower back in place with both hands.

INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE BEDROOM – MINUTES LATER

Already in running outfit, Richard stands outside Denise’s closed bedroom door, and looks at his watch: 4:45 A.M. He smiles with satisfaction, as he readies himself to pound on the door.
Door opens. Denise, also in running outfit, smiles.

DENISE
Sleep well?

RICHARD
Well enough....
(suspicious)
Why?

DENISE
You don’t look too good.

She raises her v ideo camera and points it at him.

RICHARD
What are you doing?

DENISE
This will give my mom second
thoughts for sure.

Richard’s anger rises. He forces a smile for the camera, but not very convincingly.

RICHARD
Time’s a wasting, little
sweetheart. A little exercise will
do your little body good.

EXT. PARK – LATER THAT MORNING

Denise huffs and puffs, several steps behind Richard. She can barely keep up. Despite the lack of sleep, Richard is only slightly out of breath. He looks back at Denise. He is loving it! He has a grin from ear to ear, making little effort to conceal his pleasure.

RICHARD
Race you to the top of that hill.

Through her huffing and puffing, Denise stabs Richard with an angry stare. He smiles at her, adding fuel to the fire.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
What’s the matter? Tired?

Denise stops running. Red faced, she bends over, hands on knees, trying to catch her breath. Richard stops too, enjoying the scene.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
(beat)
Well, I guess it’s safe to say
You’re not president of the Cross
Country Club.

Denise hears THE SOUND OF RUNNING FEET and straightens up.
In the distance, THREE WOMEN RUNNERS have just rounded a bend in the path and run in their direction.
Denise watches as they approach.

Richard notices Denise’s attention has been diverted, but thinks nothing of it. He continues to grin from ear to ear, basking in self-satisfaction.
The Women run past them, without incident.
Suddenly, Denise takes off after them.

Richard’s self-satisfied grin vanishes. Mouth slightly open and a dumb and perplexed look on his face, he watches as Denise closes in.
Without warning, Denise runs into the RUNNER in the middle, nearly knocking her down and falling down herself in the process.
Richard’s confusion turns into shock and then fear.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
(to self)
Good God!

He rushes to the scene. Maybe he can prevent whatever’s coming.
Surprised and upset, the Woman Runner’s anger subsides when she looks at Denise lying on the ground, clutching her stomach.
Concerned, Woman Runner #2 kneels down to examine Denise, just as Richard reaches them.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
What are you doing, Denise?

The Woman glances at him slightly annoyed and then refocuses on Denise.

WOMAN RUNNER #2
Are you okay, honey?

DENISE
I think so.

WOMAN RUNNER #2
What happened?

DENISE
I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to
do it so hard.

WOMAN RUNNER #3
You ran into her on purpose?

DENISE
I’m really sorry.

WOMAN RUNNER
Why did you run into me?

DENISE
Because you have the biggest boobs.

The Three Runners exchange perplexed looks. Richard looks perplexed too.
Denise looks up at Richard. The Three Runners all turn to look at Richard. A light bulb turns on all at once.
A switch is flipped and the Runners’ anger wells up.
Still confused, Richard looks from one to the other, until slowly it dawns on him. Denise has nailed him again.

RICHARD
Wait a minute! I had nothing to do
with this. She did it on her own!

Woman Runner #2 helps Denise to her feet.
The other two Runners move closer to Richard.

WOMAN RUNNER
You worthless worm.

WOMAN RUNNER #3
You’re not even man enough to admit
it.

RICHARD
There’s nothing to admit.
(points at Denise)
She’s angry because I outran her.
She’s just trying to get even.

Denise looks shocked and hurt. Woman Runner #2 puts her arm around her shoulder.

WOMAN RUNNER #2
It’s okay, honey.

Their anger rising, the other two Runners take a step toward Richard.

WOMAN RUNNER
First, you use your daughter, then
you expect her to take the blame
for your dirty scheme?

WOMAN RUNNER #3
What kind of father are you?

RICHARD
It’s not my dirty scheme. It’s
hers. She’s not even my daughter!

Denise looks hurt. Shock and contempt from the Women.
Woman Runner PUNCHES Richard in the face, all 150 pounds of her solid frame behind the blow.
Richard falls to the ground.
As the three Runners walk away, leaving Denise and Richard behind, Denise stands over Richard, who’s still on the ground.

DENISE
Thanks for bringing me to the park.
It was fun.

INT. RICHARD’S OFFICE – AFTERNOON

Richard sits behind desk, head down, writing on a patient’s chart. After a few seconds, he closes the chart and looks up.
He is sporting a healthy shiner.

RECPTIONIST
(V.O. on intercom)
Dr. Utterman, Tommy Sciola’s here
for his individual session.

Richard perks up.

RICHARD
Good, send him in.

Ignoring Richard, Tommy enters and sits as far away as he possibly can. Calm and collected, he chews gum with a silent, deadly serious expression.
Richard rises, moves around the desk, walks over to where Tommy is sitting and sits in front of him.
Tommy looks at Richard for the first time and notices his shiner. Tommy perks up, a hint of amusement in his eyes.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
(smiles to self)
I thought you’d appreciate that.

TOMMY
I didn’t say nothing. To be
honest, I’m sort of distressed
about it. What happened to you?
Get mugged?

RICHARD
(beat)
Maybe I’ll give you all the details
on your birthday. You know, for
the first time since you’ve been
coming, I’m actually happy to see
you.

Tommy looks at him with suspicion.

TOMMY
Don’t you want to know what I did
yesterday?

RICHARD
Nah... I really don’t care. See,
You’re my most difficult case.
You’re the only patient who isn’t
getting any better. And just this
morning, after going for a run in
the park, I figured out why.

Tommy looks at Richard, surprised. He sure wasn’t expecting this.

TOMMY
(intrigued)
Why?

RICHARD
Because you’re a sociopath.

TOMMY
Are you supposed to be telling
patients these things?

Richard chuckles.

RICHARD
No. Of course not.

TOMMY
So...?
汤米

RICHARD
Why am I telling you? Because I
need your advice. As a certifiable
sociopath your point of view is
very valuable to me, right now.

TOMMY
What’s in it for me?

Richard pulls out his wallet and shows Tommy a one hundred dollar bill.

RICHARD
You have to promise to be honest.

TOMMY
Okay.
汤米
好。

Richard hands him the bill.

RICHARD
What went through your head as you
took my money?

TOMMY
That I wish someone would kick your
ass every time I have a therapy
session.

Richard smiles from ear to ear.

RICHARD
Very good, Tommy. You kept your
word.

TOMMY
A hundred buck’s a hundred bucks.
So what do you want to know?

RICHARD
If someone as ruthless as you, but
a lot smarter...

TOMMY
Hey, I’m smart!

RICHARD
This isn’t about you, Tommy. Let’s
focus here.

Tommy nods.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
If a person like that sets out to
systematically destroy someone...
could they be stopped?

Tommy thinks about it and smiles.

TOMMY
You’re screwed, Dr. Utterman.
