The import requirements for fresh taro have been amended following a preliminary review of the certification conditions for this product. The amended phytosanitary certification (additional declarations) is to provide some assurance that the goods are not the prohibited taro Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorum, and requires the certifying authority to endorse that the taro has been correctly trimmed to remove foliage and potential growing points (ie topped and tailed).
The amended certification now requires several additional declarations to be endorsed on Phytosanitary certificates. These are:
1. ¡°The taro in this consignment is Colocasia esculenta var. esculenta and not Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorum.¡± And
2. ¡° The tubers have been inspected and are topped and free from all foliage including petiole bases, and free from sprouting suckers and attached daughter corms, and are free from soil.¡± And
3. ¡°The product is free from Potato Cyst Nematode (PCN) (Globodera rostochiensis and Globodera pallida) and potato black wart fungus (Synchytrium endobioticum)¡±, Or
4. ¡°PCN (Globodera rostochiensis and Globodera pallida) and potato black wart fungus (Synchytrium endobioticum) are not known to occur in the country of origin¡±.
All current Import Permits for fresh taro are being re-issued and permit holders notified of the changed additional declarations. Overseas trading partners are also being notified of the changes. |
