中国成全澳第二新州最大移民来源国

根据澳大利亚移民部公布的2009至2010年度移民来源国报告，这些移民选择澳大利亚作为他们的新家印证了澳作为“明智国度”（Smart State）的地位。
数据显示，按照出生地来讲，新西兰和中国依次是澳大利亚最大和次大的移民来源国。印度、英国、南非也位居移民来源国前五位。
2009至2010年，一共有140,610新移民，比前一年减少了11%。目前的移民水平和2006至2007年相当。
移民部发言人称：“政府对技术移民体系采取了一系列战略性改革，让它更能匹配劳动力市场的需求。改革后，移民政策只选择最聪明最优秀的移民人才前来。”
其中，新南威尔士州是最受移民欢迎的地方，不过其它州的移民人数也在不断增加。2009至2010年间，该州移民人数达到42,267人，比上个年度的47,030人下滑超过10%。中国和印度是新南威尔士州最大和次大的移民来源国，2009至2010年共有7062个中国人和4441个印度人移民至该州。
维多利亚州在2009至2010年度是中国和印度移民的首选，其移民来自世界各地。
首都领地和堪培拉地区的移民人数保持稳定。2009至2010年度，将堪培拉作为定居点的移民达到1850人，不过比起上个年度的1942人，仍然有所下滑。
昆士兰州新移民人数从2008至2009年的33,029人，降至24,946人，下滑比例达到24.5%。南澳移民人数稳步上涨，从2008至2009年的9695人达到2009至2010年的11,377人，增幅达到17.3%。
联邦政府在2010至2011年财政预算称将移民名额定制为168,700人，其中113,850名技术移民，54,550名亲属担保移民，还有300个特殊名额。
发言人表示：“这将使技术移民的比例增加到67.5%，一方面符合经济的需求，另一方面继续强化家庭和团聚移民。”
